Bible Notes on “The First and the Last”

leave a comment »

The notes below go with today’s post of A Nonchurchgoer’s Guide to Jesus and His Kingdom.

Revelation 1:17; 2:8; 22:13

Isaiah 41:4; 44:6; 48:12

When the New Testament’s book of Revelation refers to Jesus in three separate places as “the first and
the last” is it echoing the Old Testament’s book of Isaiah which in three separate places God referred to
Himself as “the first and the last.”

The idea is that God is the first God and the last God. There is no God before Him, there is no God after
Him, and there is no God between or beside Him.

Thus Jesus is God…and there is no other. He is the First and the Last.

Bible Notes on “The Lord of Hosts”

The notes below go with today’s post of A Nonchurchgoer’s Guide to Jesus and His Kingdom.

1 Samuel 1:3 (This is the first of over 200 references to the “Lord of hosts” in the Old Testament.  It only shows up twice in the New Testament [Romans 9:29; James 5:4], but there it is rendered as “Lord of Sabaoth.”  Either way, the term is simply another way of referring to our Lord, but one which emphasizes the enormity of His following – a fact which needs emphasis in the sinful world in which we find ourselves.)

Matthew 12:1-8

Luke 6:1-5

Isaiah 58:13-14 (In this passage, Isaiah is speaking to the people of his day but also foreshadowing the great day of God when we should no longer live for ourselves but for God and others; see 2 Corinthians 5:15.  We who breathe now live in that eternal day.  To God through Christ be the glory!)
